Manhood

I just need to say right off here that I AM NOT READY TO BE A MOTHER TO BOYS!!!!! So my oldest comes home tonight having passed his Hunter Safety Course and can now go to WalMart and get his hunting license. I'll fess up - the boy is VERY smart, but I thought to myself, "What is the harm?? There is just no way he'll pass this exam - it's his first try?" Nope, wrong again, he passes the first time (unlike his mother at her driving exams - yes, I said examS - I had to take another one a few years back when my license expired!!!). So now, he can officially get his hunting license - next it's his driver's license - I AM NOT READY!!!! This is a bit frightening - he said he shot a 20 gauge tonight - I asked him, "Micah, could that kill an animal?" He looked at me like I had lost my mind - as he gently answered, "Yes, Mom, it could." It was then that I felt my motherly duty to remind him, "WE DON'T KILL BAMBI!!!" Ok, enough said - I am proud that he passed - I am not sure I am ready for such things however!!!

Oh yeah, I get it. I am not ready for lots of things too. I am happy they are growing up, but sad too. What strange people we are- us moms. :-)

NO!!!!!He may not hunt,or shoot a gun,he is way to young.
I think they should have to be at least 16 before they may hunt and shoot a gun.
I can say that since I've never shot a gun and am not MR.Hunter.

I think it's a little late to not be ready for boys!!!! lol If he isn't going to kill Bambi, what are you planning on him killing? haha My husband and boys hunt and LOVE it. I don't see the greatness of it. Richard keeps wanting me to go. He should give it up, as should you, he's going to kill Bambi! lol

Hey Becky,

I did not think Alec would pass either. Then when he came skipping in the house, I knew he had. Then I find out Ryan is buying him a gun to hunt with. O great!!

Life with boys. It is never boring. But I doubt I will ever understand the interest in guns or hunting.

I don't like guns! My boys always play with them. I don't even let them watch movies with guns...but that doesn't stop them. It must be in the blood?

I don't know what I would do if I had boys! My dad would have to take them hunting cuz my DH is not a hunter. He catches spiders in a cup and sets them free! ;)

Hey, I didn't know you lived in the state we visited last weekend. We went to the Field of Dreams movie site (just west of Dubuque). Are you close to that area?

My heart goes out to you!!! Im scared to death of guns and there are a million things than can go wrong HOWEVER... since he passed his test and i KNOW you will make triple sure he is in safe company when hunting and be super smart about it all should be good. And I agree.... We SHOULD NOT KILL BAMBI OR THUMPER!!!

Now Becky, Just think of the meat he might be bringing home for the family! We always have deer meat in our freezer and it's not soooo bad. I hear pheasant, squirrel, grouse etc. are very delectable! There's also a program up at the local butcher's that lets hunters donate their deer and they give them to food shelters, etc. Plus, a really big bonus is, if he would happen to kill a really big "Bambi" with a big 12pt. rack or more he could earn his whole college education in that rack alone, and I'm serious! Then, I think we need to have a serious discussion about your 'Bambi' complex. You're from Iowa for heaven's sake.

Those boys are sure nothing like their father at that age. The last thing he thought about was sports and hunting. Micah is sure growing up fast. Love MomV

i have to admit i don't think i have to worry about having any hunters in the family .. hubby had a bad experience as a child (not killing bambi, but thumper) and it has stuck with him ever since ... i guess we will just stick to the sports ...

Yes, I can relate. Tyler passed hunter's safety this year too and went on youth hunt last weekend. He is my 3rd child to pass. My family does hunt Bambi though. My husband's family is a hunting family. In November, we will have 6 hunters leaving our house for deer season this year. My BIL and FIL are coming over.

You'd better GET ready, girl!
Boys are an unusual kind - Jay and I are both happy to be parenting a girl over here...HOWEVER, your boys are pretty stinkin' cool. Great job, Micah! My FIL would be so proud - he is a MAJOR HUNTER -- animal heads ALL OVER THEIR WALLS IN THE BASEMENT...

When you are harvesting your crops and forget to bring in a bundle of grain from your field, don't go back to get it. Leave it for the foreigners, orphans and widows. Then the LORD your God will bless you in all you do.
