Snow Day!!

We are tough homeschoolers over here - we usually don't take "snow days" like the schools do - but we did make some time today for "snow fun"!! I wanted to share these great ideas as they are not mine and you might like to use them as well!

First we started our Snow Flake Cocoa and it simmered for 2 and a half hours:
Then we made our Snowflakes to eat!!

Even the boys thought we were quite culinary!

Smoking

The boys are getting ready to head out of the van on this -1 degree day and Chloe says, "Boys, I hope you don't smoke while you are outside." Of course, we all asked her what she meant. To which she replied, "Well, when I'm outside, I don't mean to, but sometimes I smoke when I open my mouth. I try not to open my mouth but I have to breathe. I know smoking is bad for me, I'm sorry I do that." After we all tried DESPERATELY to hide our giggles, we explained to her the facts of Iowa winters and breathing!!

The Snowy Day

So before we went to bed we were seeing 3-6 inches in the forecast -
We got up to close to a foot of the fluffy white stuff.
The problems began when it took OVER AN HOUR to clean out JUST the driveway since our snowblower quit working.  Mr. Bilby was not happy - to say the least.
SO I mentioned to Mr. Brian that our blower wasn't working and guess what he does - shows up with his snowblower!!!  What a guy!!  Thank you Mr. Brian!  (Mr. Bilby is happy now.)

Fluffy White Stuff

Could that be snow that I see outside??  Yes, I do believe it is!  BRING IT ON!!!!  Oh why can't I live in the Black Hills - 30 inches!?!?!?  Now that's some snow!!

Broken Promise

I realize I promised NO MORE pics of the blizzard but I have no other "blog fodder" today and I built this so I may as well share it!!!! (As usual, double click on it to see it larger!) This will be THE LAST of the snow pics, I re-promise!!! :)

BLIZZARD #3

I promise - after this - I won't show any more!! But we went out today after being stuck (basically) since Wednesday (many of our roads are still blown shut around here and we saw some roads where people still can not get out) SO here's what we saw:
This drift was as tall as our car - they had to dig through to let cars through.

Outside Dad's work - This drift is the one you saw on a previous post outside Joe's window!!

Out front of our house - look at those drifts!!

Oh yes, our political commentary here - Joe wanted me to mention that Al Gore and his global warming theory is taking a hit right now - at least 10 inches of snow two weekends in a row (that's a record for us the weatherman said), the biggest blizzard since 1975, and below normal temps since January - Joe is smiling!!! :)

MORE BLIZZARD

Whew - it's still not done!! Here are my few tidbits to share - I always wanted to be a meteorologist!!!
*I called for pizza last night - BOTH our pizza places were CLOSED!
*No mail since yesterday and probably won't have any until MONDAY!
*Again, Joe's work is telling everyone to go home - their plows are giving up for the time being - as are the city's - they just can't keep up.
*Here's Joe's window at work - it's at least a 7 ft. drift

*Joe snowblowed this morning and an hour later we could not see our driveway.
*The snowblower is now totally ineffective as it can't throw the snow high enough to get over the drifts on either side of the driveway.
*My personal favorite - the drifts are taller than Joe!!!!!

*This picture was taken by Ladyl (she posts here sometimes) - she lives outside of town and has been stuck there now for a couple of days. Love that drift - and the snow blowing off of it - see what we're dealing with out here?!?! Yep, and I still love it!!! :)

(She didn't make the "!' on her window either - that's mother nature expressing herself!!)
*Here's a picture we got from a guy Joe works with - he's at least 6 foot tall - check out those drifts in his driveway - he didn't make it to work today!!

BLIZZARD

Just in case anyone is worried for me - you have good reason - I nearly died a million times this morning - ok, not a million but at least two!!! Yep, the weather man was correct AGAIN - this is the WORST storm we have seen in at least a decade. It started yesterday with freezing rain, turned to snow and snowed all night - is STILL snowing - and should continue through tomorrow evening. Now, the winds are picking up and they are claiming blizzard conditions. I'd say we have close to a foot of snow now already and another 6-7 inches are still to come. All of our major highways are closed, our whole downtown is closed (except the library - but it is to close in a couple of hours) - even our hospital is closed except for emergencies. SO - I have to go to work - I'm thinking - I'm in town, no sweat - in fact, Joe said it was even fine enough to get a coffee. So- I go to our local coffee shop - take the drive through - get my coffee - now the trick - the drive through is uphill - duh, why didn't I think of that BEFORE?!?!? So - I attempt the exit - twice - no way this van is going up that hill - I back out of the drive through - yes, for those of you who know how I back up, that was a feat!! Ok, out of that parking lot - I make it to the library - now the library has a slight incline to make it into their parking lot - I tried twice - ended up sliding back out into traffic both time - oh yes, traffic AND honking - give me a break, like I would purposefully back out into traffic!!! So - I tried TWO more times to get in - finally, the last time, I gave it all the van's got - I never let up on the gas and gunned my way into that lot - I MADE IT!!! Yeah, I made it all right - who knew if I'd get out though in four hours!!

Yep, four hours later - I go out to get into my van - which you can hardly see because of all the snow and blowing - but you also can't see the sidewalk - totally misjudged that one too and ended up on my butt sitting in the parking lot. Oh man, I was just waiting for candid camera! I did manage to get home - had to take two runs to get up my very small road and then FIVE runs to get into the driveway, which Joe had snowblowed just an hour before!!! I made it in, shut the garage door, and prayed that my family hadn't seen me. Whew - they were all eating and missed the whole show.

Needless to say, doubt I'll be going anywhere for a day or two!! The library IS closing, the groceries stores are locking up, they are calling all the plows in and where are my boys?????? Out in the snow of course, now mind you, I did warn them of the blizzard where many children died (I had to do it - I'm reading that book RIGHT NOW and I couldn't let them go out unaware!!!). So they are properly prepared and have strict instructions to STAY TOGETHER - they think I'm a nut!!! :)

Lest you think I'm complaining - not me - I LOVE this stuff - BRING IT ON!!! But just let me stay home now - that was enough adventure for one day!! (or for one WINTER!!!)

Chinese New Year

Well - they didn't cancel!! We were so glad - that is such a fun celebration - we had such a great time with our China travelmates - the Anderson's!! What a treat - EVEN more reason to celebrate!!! So here are some pictures - I think since they are still celebrating in China - I'll celebrate this whole week with pictures from our weekend - I took plenty - just ask Verna!!!!

Chloe and Mya posing by the Dragon - see how cooperative they were - really all they wanted to do was play - they really hit it off!! Two peas in a pod!!

By the way - we did leave tonight - headed home and the snow started again - as we saw cars going into the ditch before our eyes, we wisely decided to call it a night and plan to finish it up tomorrow morning!! It's ok though - we had a great time - and we were all ready to stop and sleep anyway - bad weather or no bad weather - some things are just worth doing!!!

Weekend

Yep, made it to Minneapolis for Chinese New Year - look out Keith and Verna - we may be coming over and staying for a week now!! We got here just fine but it's been snowing all day pretty steady and no sign of stopping yet - hmmm, that weather man may have been correct after all - now that's a first!!!

A Girl Can Dream, Can't She???

This is what I woke up to this morning.....

Snowman Wishes

Just in case you all don't have snow - Chloe wanted to send you a little snowman!

40 Degrees – Italian cars in California won’t start. People in Indiana drive with the windows down.

20 Degrees – People in Florida wear coats, gloves and wooly hats. People in Michigan wear long sleeves.

0 Degrees – People in Miami cease to exist. Folks in Wisconsin have their last cook-out before it gets cold.

-20 Degrees – Californians fly to Mexico. Minnesotans get out their Winter coats.

-40 Degrees – Hollywood disintegrates. Girl Scouts in South Dakota begin selling cookies door to door.

-100 Degrees – Polar bears migrate to Antarctica. Old timers in Iowa start saying, “Cold nuff for ya?”

(Yes - and it's only a balmy 5 degrees today - we have a long way to go!!!!)

Catching Up.....

This is me today - lovin' that snow!!!! It's been snowing all day and is still coming - can you hear me cheering over here?!?!? I just love this stuff. I've heard we are HOPING FOR (ok, I'm hoping for) the 6 inches the weatherman said (which I actually think we already have) and the high winds - 25-30 mph - one can only hope, right?!? And it's not for a snow day either - my poor kids don't know what those are!!! "Mean Mom", I hear you all saying, but don't worry - we take other days off and they never complain!!

I wanted to give an update on the heart issue as well. I rescheduled the tests I had cancelled after I talked to a few people. Friday I got all the results back and the blood work, EKG, and chest xray looked very normal - so all that worry for nothing! Actually - I am VERY thankful to all of you that emailed me or forwarded me emails from others - I really may have done nothing unless I had heard from all of you. So, at this point, I am planning to do nothing more unless it happens again - then my doctor says he has some more tests to run - so here's to hoping I am done with all of that.

Well - it's off to do some hockey laundry - gotta get ready for another week! The boys did great yesterday- our oldest son's team took first in the tournament and our middle son's team took second - hey, not bad for being the "new guys". It was a fun day but that is literally all we got done - hockey, hockey and more hockey!!

SNOW and FINGERPRINTS!!!

We woke up to snow this morning - ok, they promised 4 inches - we maybe had less than one but I'll take it!! I am a snow freak so we partied over here. Chloe was thrilled too when her brothers pointed it out to her - she said, "No, No" - that didn't mean No like we know it - that is "snow" with the "S" left off!!! She kept running to the windows to see the "no"!!

AND - the other good news - we got our fingerprinting appointment - it is next week - and we are just glad it all got worked out. It seems to be taking forever to us but we were reminded again how important it is for us to do this. We have been having to attend weekly meetings through Bethany, our adoption agency. These meetings are something new they've started - we didn't have to do them last time - but they are so good - we are learning a lot. Anyway - last night's was about orphanage conditions, etc. and they showed a short video of the babies in China. Again - I was reminded of how Chloe spent the first 9 months of her life - no one to pick her up and rock her, sleeping with two or three other little ones in a bed, bottles propped up on blankets to feed them, barely ever leaving the cribs, no baths, etc., etc. I was in tears as I watched it - I know, I've been over and over it in my head many times and it had to happen before we could ever get her, but I am so sad that little ones have to live like that. And yet, I do think that most of the orphanages are doing all they can. Really - who could take the time to rock, hold, feed, etc. literally hundreds of babies?? It just makes me so thankful God has allowed us to help one more little one - they need arms to hold them and the blessings we get in return are immeasurable!!

WAY TOO HOT!!

Ok - it is hot and it is humid and I LOVE WINTER!!! What am I doing out here anyway - I'd rather be in Alaska or SIBERIA!!! So - I had to post some winter photos - maybe I'll feel better!!

When you are harvesting your crops and forget to bring in a bundle of grain from your field, don't go back to get it. Leave it for the foreigners, orphans and widows. Then the LORD your God will bless you in all you do.
